Prof. Giorgio Cracco

(Valdagno, 15th January, 1934) is an Italian historian.

 

-  Graduated in Letters and Philosophy at the University of Padua (1957)

-  Diploma in Palaeography and Archivistics from the Vatican School (1959)

-  Lecturer in Medieval History (1967)

-  Full Professor of Medieval History at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Padua (1973-1988)

-  Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study of Princeton (1975-1976)

-  Full Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Turin (since 1988)

-  Visiting Professor at Berkeley, Ca. (1985)

-  Section chairman at the World Conference of Historians in Stuttgart (1985)

-  Representative of the Ministry of Education in the 08 Committee of the National Research Council (1990–1996)

-  Head of the Institute of Italo-Germanic History of Trento (1998 – 2005)

-  Director of the ‘Eric Peterson’ Library of Religious Sciences at Turin University (1990 – 2000)

-  Co-editor of the great ‘History of Venice’ published by the ‘G. Cini’ Foundation of Venice and by the Enciclopedia Italiana.

-  Co-editor of the ‘Rivista di storia e letteratura’ (since 1990)

-  General Secretary of the Institute for Research in the social and religious history of Vicenza (since 2005).

-  Sectors of research and publication: the social and religious history of the Middle Ages; the History of Contemporary Historiography.

-  Author of approximately 200 publications, among which ten volumes, from the first published in 1967 (Società e Stato nel Medioevo Veneziano, secoli XII-XIV) to the latest being prepared for publication, In viaggio per dove: pellegrinaggi e  santuari nella storia cristiana).

-  Promoter and editor of series of texts and sources, of conferences and of seminars, especially on the origins of Europe (e.g.: Il Papato e l’Europa, edited by G. De Rosa and G. Cracco, 2001; Europa in costruzione: la forza delle identità, la ricerca di unità, edited by G. Cracco, J. le Goff, H. Keller, G. Ortalli, 2006) and on the relations between Germany and Italy (e.g., L’umanità offesa. Stermini e memoria nell’Europa del Novecento, edited by G. Corni and G. Hirschfeld, 2002; Gli Italiani in Germania tra Ottocento e Novecento, edited by G. Corni and Ch. Dipper, 2006).

-  Creator and director of numerous research projects; at present engaged on a three-year Project of research (financed by ENI, Italy) into the cults and pilgrimages in Kazakhstan in the last two centuries.

-  In 2008 he received the charge from the President of the European Parliament, with other eight experts of history of other   states of Community, to plan the "House of the European history" that will shortly be realized to Bruxelles.
